ABSTRACT
The Miechów Upland is one of the meaningful areas for study the Miocene geology. Middle Miocene (Karpatian to Early Sarmatian) sediments have been recognised there. The deposits are highly variegated in regard of lithology. Brackish and fresh-water Karpatian sediments are followed by different rocks of broad marine transgression during Moravian, ended by the early Sarmatian ones. Depending on the prominent paleo relief of the Cretaceous basement, a varieties of sediments have been deposited during this time. Marly claystones, silts, sands with mudstone intercalations and detrital limestones (Rhodolith bioherms) are the most common. Also the Middle Badenian sulphate evaporates are in the Miechów Upland. State of the Miocene stratotype outcrops had been checked in this area. The access to most of them is impossible cause soil and vegetation coverage within the abandoned opencasts. The only exception is the small, still working silt-pit of the local brick-yard. The solution is effective to both animate the local economy and warrant the access to stratotype section. Due to fertile Pleistocene loess soils the region is extensively use by agriculture, but touched by relevant economic and social problems. The arriving to small-scale opencast mining, accompanied with innovative manufacturing of the resources (silts, clays, sands and carbonates) is proposed. Modern mining elaborates a way of working in high level of accordance with the ecological engineering principles and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards so shall not generate nasty threats to the state of soils and agricultural character of the region. A development of unique, regional products on the base of local resources (e.g. unique, regional decorative stones or pottery) is worth to be consider by the LEADER program activities. The initiation of innovative mining enterprises and handcraft seems to be a good strategy to improve local economy and promising solution to highlight the image of country. By this approach it will be possible the revitalization stratotype outcrops and the economic development of rural areas by mineral business – parallel to ongoing agricultural circumstances and benefits.
