ABSTRACT
As water scarcity intensifies and climate change accelerates, adopting sustainable irrigation techniques becomes essential for maintaining agricultural productivity. This study assesses the effectiveness of the olla irrigation system, an eco-friendly, ancestral technique, in improving water distribution in the sandy soils of the Maâmora Forest, Morocco. The primary goal is to simulate and analyze water movement and soil hydration under olla irrigation using the HYDRUS-2D model, to evaluate the efficiency and environmental impact of this low-tech, water-saving method. The experimental research was conducted in the western Maâmora region, characterized by sandy soils and low initial moisture content. Key soil properties, including bulk density, initial water content, and hydrodynamic parameters, were measured and modeled using the Van Genuchten and Brooks-Corey equations. Water release from the OLLA, with a daily flow rate of 2.78 L/day, was simulated over a 25-day period, with no-flux lateral boundaries and free drainage at the base. Results show that olla irrigation effectively wets the soil, with water infiltration spreading both laterally and vertically over time. By day 7, the wetted zone was concentrated around the olla, and by day 25, moisture distribution had expanded significantly. The simulation confirms that olla systems can maintain efficient water delivery while minimizing evaporation and runoff. The study underscores the potential of olla irrigation for sustainable water management in arid and semi-arid areas. Its low cost, ease of installation, and minimal environmental impact make it an ideal solution for small-scale farmers and environmentally conscious agricultural practices. This research provides valuable insights into traditional irrigation methods and contributes to the broader understanding of sustainable agriculture.
