ABSTRACT
Manmade activities may affect air qualification standards and causing air pollution that bears impacts on both public health and environment. The current was designed to examine certain air pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) for 12 months in three environmentally different locations of Nader3, Al-Jazaer and Zwair districts within Al-Hilla city, Babylon province, Iraq. The examined air variables were measured by using portable particulate monitor device while air gases of CO, NO2 and SO2 were evaluated by using portable multi gas meter. All readings were taken on 12 months representing all seasons where the data of each three months of each season were used to calculate the mean value ± standard deviation of examined pollutants. The obtained results have shown that Nader3 site had highest mean values of PM 2.5, CO and SO2 during all seasons and Al-Jazaer location showed highest mean value of NO2 again during all seasons while Zwair district had the lowest mean values of all examined pollutants during all seasons. Obviously, Nader3 site gave mean air PM values varying from 68.33±15.4 µg/m3 during summer season to 120.3±17.1 µg/m3 during autumn season while air CO had mean values ranging from 0.598±0.28 ppm to 1.54±0.077 ppm in winter and autumn seasons respectively, also, this location showed mean values of SO2 varying from 0.033±0.003 ppm in spring to 0.039±0.0047 ppm in autumn. Meanwhile, Al-gazaer site gave mean NO2 values laid between 0.035 ± 0.0018 ppm and 0.029 ± 0.0018 ppm in autumn and spring seasons respectively. Finally, Zwair site had the lowest mean values of all examined air pollutants where in case of PM 2.5, the mean values varied from 26.3±6.57 µg/m3 in spring season to 33.0±6.567 µg/m3 in winter season whilst for CO, the mean values ranged from 0.041±0.026 ppm to 0.158±0.019 ppm in spring and summer seasons respectively but these data of NO2 were recorded to vary from 0.004±0.0004 ppm in summer season to 0.023±0.005 ppm in spring season while this location had lowest mean SO2 values ranging from 0.001±0.0007 ppm in summer season to 0.003±0.001ppm in both winter and autumn seasons.
