Urban expansion and land use change are the most crucial of the numerous complex elements that will affect our cities in the future. Mafraq city witnessed rapid population growth with land use changes. Using multi-temporal remote sensing and GIS techniques, this study aims to provide land use change maps and data for Al-Mafraq city, to evaluate urban growth and land use change during a 19-year period, from 2004 to 2023, and to highlight the analysis of how the campus of Al-al Bayt University affected Mafraq City's urban growth and environmental impact between 2004 and 2023. This growth was particularly significant after the university's west gate opened in 2009. Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used in this work. The results of the land cover classification demonstrated a high level of accuracy. The SVM method achieved overall accuracy values of 80.50%, 80.60%, 83.30%, and 82.70% for the LULC maps of 2004, 2010, 2016, and 2023, respectively. The corresponding Cohen’s Kappa coefficients were 0.7400, 0.7413, 0.7773, and 0.7693, respectively .The analysis of land area changes for the four main land use classifications—urban, soil, vegetation, and quarry—showed that urban land use grew at the fastest rate compared to other land use classes in all time periods. The results demonstrate the university's influence in the extension and direction of urban growth. They describe how urban growth was stimulated towards the university by the opening of the west gate. Also, the study showed that precise land use maps, urban growth maps, population density maps, and comprehensive change statistics for Mafraq city could be generated with remote sensing data and geomatics techniques. This database can be used to make decisions and create strategies for delivering appropriate services, as well as to help create policies for land use and urban expansion.
