Anthropogenic risk assessment of riverine habitat using an ecosystem-based risk approach for river management prioritization: A case study from the Biyonga River, Indonesia

Riverine ecosystems are increasingly exposed to multiple anthropogenic pressures that interact across the river corridor, creating challenges for effective management prioritization. This study aimed to assess spatial patterns of relative cumulative anthropogenic risk at a screening level and identify priority areas for further management consideration along the Biyonga River, Indonesia. A spatial assessment framework was applied by integrating land use/land cover (LULC) analysis with the InVEST Habitat Risk Assessment (HRA) model. Nine anthropogenic stressors representing hydromorphological alteration, land-use pressure, and water-quality stress were assessed. The analysis further examined the effect of buffer distances of 50, 100, 250, and 500 m on estimated relative cumulative risk and identified management priority hotspots based on the spatial distribution and intensity of stressors. Within the baseline 100-m buffer, the mean Exposure, Consequence, and cumulative Risk scores were 1.357, 1.344, and 2.689, respectively, with 52.75% of the assessed area classified as medium relative anthropogenic risk and 47.25% as low relative anthropogenic risk. Water-quality stressors, particularly Organic Pollution, Sediment Loading, Chemical Pollution, and Aquatic Oxygen Stress, represented the dominant relative-risk dimension. Increasing buffer distance progressively increased the estimated cumulative Risk scores and the proportion of areas classified as medium relative anthropogenic risk, while the dominant stressor pattern remained consistent. Three management priority hotspots were identified along the Biyonga River, each characterized by different combinations of dominant anthropogenic stressors and relative risk levels. These findings provide a screening-level basis for identifying areas warranting further investigation and management consideration, rather than direct evidence of actual environmental degradation. Field verification, environmental monitoring, and ecological assessment are therefore needed to validate the identified priority areas and their potential ecological implications.
