Baseline assessment and comparative analysis of soil properties: a case study from an agricultural research farm in western Ukraine

Soil monitoring at the Educational and Research Production Farm ‘Nauka’ of the West Ukrainian National University was conducted to assess the chemical, physical, and biological properties of soils and to evaluate their fertility and suitability for agricultural crop production. During the first stage of the study, soil samples were collected from two experimental plots (Fields 7 and 8), allowing the assessment of soil pH, electrical conductivity, organic matter content, and the concentrations of macro- and micronutrients. The average soil pH was 6.7 in Field 7, indicating near-neutral conditions, and 7.2 in Field 8. Electrical conductivity in Field 7 ranged from 14 to 42 mS/m, with a mean value of 21.4 mS/m, corresponding to non-saline conditions suitable for agricultural use. Organic matter content in Field 7 varied between 2.8% and 3.9%, with an average of 3.1%, which is considered optimal for maintaining soil fertility. Nitrogen content was 7.5 mg/kg in Field 7 and 4.3 mg/kg in Field 8, indicating the need for additional measures to improve nitrogen availability. Special attention was given to the assessment of soil biological activity, including the abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate-mobilising bacteria, streptomycetes, and other microbial groups. The abundance of oligonitrophilic and nitrogen-fixing bacteria in Field 7 ranged from 1.51E+07 to 4.55E+07 CFU/g, reflecting a high potential for biological nitrogen fixation. Further research will support the development of evidence-based recommendations for sustainable land management, aimed at enhancing soil health, environmental sustainability, and agricultural productivity under conditions of climate change and intensive land use.
