The unexploited values of biologically active areas in cities are a national-scale problem. The lack of preservation of green areas, poor planning and inadequate spatial planning guidelines – resulting in the conversion of green areas to other functions – can devastate a city. The retrospective cartographic analysis of the greenery systems in Głogów is used to show the sustainable changes in urban evolution over the last 400 years. The results of the analysis could be used as a base for the guidelines of other cities with a similar structure, surroundings and history.
