ABSTRACT
Stormwater can contain various types of suspensions coming directly from polluted atmosphere and running off from surfaces of plants, houses, streets. Those suspensions can be of solid, soluble or colloidal state. The information about shape, structure and size of particles forming suspensions may be of significance in terms of selecting appropriate treatment processes.
The aim of conducted research was to determine usefulness of information obtained from Malvern laser granulometer to identify shape and size of particles forming polydisperse suspensions in stormwater. Stormwater samples taken directly during rainfall and as a runoff from the roof were collected in Szklarka Myślniewska village from December 2017 to April 2018.
In the volume distribution in all samples collected directly during rainfall, particles with diameters of 100-1000 µm were predominant in suspensions, whereas in the number distribution particles of diameters of 1-10 µm. The greater diversity of particles occurring in suspensions collected from roof runoffs resulted from pollutants getting into stormwater from the roof surface and drainpipe. Suspensions in all stormwater samples were characterized by different spatial structure, determined on the basis of optical fractal dimension values, and different sediment and sorptive properties (Mean Diameters values), depending on the sampling point and date.
